Where Did It All Start?

September 20, 2025

Did you know there are more than 800 giving circles around the world, including 576 in the United States? Together, these circles have given over $56 million to causes that matter.

Volusia County Women Who Care (VCWWC) is proud to be one of them. But where did this movement begin?

Meet Karen Dunigan: The Woman Behind the Movement

The giving circle model was started by Karen Dunigan in Jackson, Michigan. Known for her no-nonsense, solution-driven approach, Karen believed deeply in helping her community.

Her idea was simple yet powerful: invite 100 women to each give $100 toward a local need. When she tried it for the first time, 130 women showed up—and together they raised every dollar required. From that moment, a movement was born.

Karen wasn’t just an innovator; she was a force of nature. The fifth of 12 siblings, she was described as blunt, determined, and funny—with the philosophy that “no” wasn’t an option when it came to helping others. She was a Realtor, a community leader, and a fundraiser who built authentic connections that fueled real change.

Lessons for Us at VCWWC

Karen’s vision continues to inspire us in Volusia County:

  • Think big. Like Karen, we don’t settle for small goals. We know pooled resources and passion can move mountains.
  • Build relationships. Our power isn’t only in our giving, but in the partnerships and connections we create.
  • Never give up. Karen’s “never say no” spirit reminds us that determination can overcome obstacles and spark lasting change.

A Legacy That Lives On

Karen passed away in 2014, but her model lives on. What started with one woman’s idea in Michigan has grown into hundreds of giving circles around the world—including ours here in Volusia County.

At VCWWC, we are proud to be part of this legacy. Together, we’re making bold investments in local nonprofits, strengthening our community, and proving that when women come together, extraordinary things happen.

Moving Forward

As members of VCWWC, you are part of something bigger—a global movement of women helping women, families, and communities thrive. Thank you for bringing Karen’s vision to life here in Volusia County.

With gratitude,
