We have all been deeply affected by the tragedy that continues to unfold due to Hurricane Helene. Many of us likely know friends or family members who have been impacted by this devastating storm. Since its landfall in Florida on September 26, Hurricane Helene has claimed at least 223 lives, with hundreds still unaccounted for amidst the widespread destruction.
I want to take a moment to share the story of one of VCWWC’s founding members, Bonnie Segan. Bonnie and her husband, Al, are thankfully safe, but their mountain community in Western North Carolina, near the Pisgah National Forest, has been severely affected. For years, Bonnie has supported VCWWC’s membership growth by offering her beautiful vacation home in Bakersville, NC, as an incentive. Each year, members who introduce a new member are entered into a drawing for a week’s stay at her picturesque cottage overlooking the Pisgah National Forest. This year’s drawing is scheduled for our November 14 meeting.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Bonnie and Al have been working tirelessly to recover from the devastation, and they are now reaching out to us for help. Bonnie shared the following:
“Folks are coming together daily for a hot meal, but financial donations are dwindling, and many are unable to work due to the disaster. Money is urgently needed to continue feeding our community with a daily meal.”
Bonnie also noted that their small community is largely cut off from assistance and remains without electricity, internet, or cell service for the foreseeable future.
As Bonnie’s message illustrates, their community is in urgent need. If you are able, please consider making a donation to the Buladean Foundation to help keep this vital meal program going.
Thank you for your generosity and continued support. Let’s come together, as we always do, to make a difference in these challenging times.
